This album is an absolute Killer. 4 tracks but they are equal to a full album cause they are that good. An absolute must for anyone. It's produced by Bobby Colomby. Think maybe...Pages 'I do believe in you' (I say this possibly cause of the similar chord progression in the song 'writing on the wall' but still, it has that great sci-fi sound). Even today I am convinced you could play 'Writing on the Wall' in a night club full of your average commercially popular music loving people and they would go mental. It's just too good for anyone to escape. I made a cd version from a good LP at exactly the same week that I noticed it came up here strangely. Would have sent it to you (and still would be delighted to if you want). I think it's pretty decent job, using good software for mastering, but your source sounds great same as all the albums you promo that are LP only. Anyway, this mini-album rocks. Truly for me one of the best things I ever heard in vintage AOR from the early 80's. Interestingly I was talking with vocalist Rick Neigher a while back. Nice chap. Very active as a producer/ songwriter for artists today. He told me he still knows Chris Cote (Avalon- keyboards/vocals) but is at a loss to where Mike Mirage is (guitar). The guitar solos on this are stunning. The drumming is great... the vocals. Everything is great. This is just a gem. Think Hardcore Hi-tech wstcoast. 10/10
Background I'm not sure what Capitol's reasons were for releasing this four track EP from the Los Angeles based Avalon, but in hindsight I'm glad they did, as it really is a pearler. I would have been more impressed if they'd released a full blown ten track album instead, but as it is, I'll take whatever's going. Combining the best bits of Styx and 'Runaway' era Dakota, it's archetypal AOR, perhaps in it's purest form. The three blokes listed above do most of the work, though there are other contributions from other L.A Session cats including Mike Porcaro, Jai Winding, Vinnie Colaiuta, and new age synthesist Mark Isham. The Songs Rick Neigher's vocal style comes close to John Elefante, and this is particularly evident on the opener 'Can't Find A Way To Say Goodbye'. There's a lovely ballad 'Deeper Than The Night'. My favorite is the mid paced melodies of 'Crossfire' while 'The Writing On The Wall's is just as good. On the strength of these four songs, they really should have gone the whole hog. So I wonder, does that mean there are some more Avalon tracks lying around in the basement of Capitol Records? In Summary Rick Neigher is the only one to have continued on the industry, becoming a topflight producer and songwriter, working with the likes of Fee Waybill, Richard Marx, and Alias.
