Great westcoast album with itīs on style. Lots of westcoast albums are made in the same formula but this one sounds fresher and i think that Paul Bliss voice is the key thing. itīs not so polished in the westcoast way. And of course great musicians and very good songs.
I was fortunate to know Paul in the seventies when the band I was a member of (along with Nigel Elliot our drumer before he joined The Bliss Band) rehearsed in the same studio in Hendon NW London. I was always amazed that Paul didn't make a bigger splash on either side of the Atlantic as both Dinnr With Raoul and Neon Smiles were class albums brimming with well crafted songs. I see Paul has become an establised memberof the Moody Blues in recent years while Phil Palmer rightly became one of the most highly respected session guitarists in the industry. Happy Days.
The Bliss Band, released their debut album "Dinner With Raoul" produced by Jeff Baxtor in 1978. Paul Bliss, born and raised in the United Kingdom, started his professional musician's career as the bass player / vocalist with the British hard rock band "Dog Soldgier" which released an album in 1975. Then, Paul started his own band and recorded demos for deal, but not materialized in the native country UK. However, when the Doobie Borthers came to UK and by accident had a chance to listen to the demo tape and touched it. Thus, the Bliss Band got a chance to perform as the opening act for Doobies and got a deal with Columbia Records, USA. Jeff Baxtor gave their first album a touch of Steely Dan.
