Byron who? The South African singer Jean Michel Byron (real name: Byron Du Plessis) joined Toto for a short spell in 1990 and recorded four new songs for their hit compilation “Past to Present”. In 1991 he left the band and released his own album simply titled "Byron" shortly after. Maybe this explains why the album contains only six tracks overall. It's a pity, because "Byron" offers superb High-Tech AOR with a slight ethno touch here and there.
A nice one, and I guess it's his only release so far. He sings also 2 or 3 tracks on the Ambition-album from Frontiers Records (release in 2006). Anyone knows if he did any more?
Jean-Michel Byron got a great voice, there's no doubt on that. But not as a front vocalist of Toto singing about mountains of Himalaya, etc. (I talked to the guys in Toto at that Past To Present-tour when Byrom was the lead singer in Toto. I asked for example Steve Lukather why this choice and if they were 100% satisfied. Lukather tried to convince me with the following words: "This is For the very, very first time that the lead singer feels real for 100%". The rest is history when they later released their Toto concert of Paris and in the end of the film on the VHS-cassette and mentioned Byrom only as "Background singer" - not lead singer!) As I wrote in the beginning - Byrom is ag reat singer but not to sing Toto-stuff! Here - on his so far as I know only solo-CD - he sings a lot more in the Michael McDonald-vein which fits his voice so much better! The arrangements on this CD is maybe a little bit to simple, but good anyway. Here You'll find Byrom's version of the Toto-song "Love Has The Power"! Produced by the Marc Jordan-sideman/co-composer John Capek!
