What is the only possible result if one of the great artists in the AOR world who contributed to so many great records releases a solo album? You guessed right: A masterpiece. Champlin’s strength is his versatility. It makes no difference if he sings funky tunes like “I Don’t Want You Anymore”, smooth groovers (“What Good Is Love”, “Keys To The Kingdom") or soulful ballads (“We Both Tried”) you can always expect the best and will never be disappointed. Essential.
I agree 100% with the previous comment. Bill Champlin's "Single" from 1978 is one of the essentials when it comes to Westcaost music. Every song on this album is fantastic but "What good is love" and "Fly with me" kinda stick out in my mind. "Single" can hardly be beat by any AOR/Westcoast release - except (in my opinion) by Bill's second solo release "Runaway" from 1981, which is truly unbelievable and sounds like a wet dream of any Westcaoast fan!!! My personal rating: ****1/2
I totally agree with the two earlier reviewers. Bear in mind that it was 27 years ago since this album was recorded. 27 YEARS !!!!!!!!! And it still sounds so fresh. And the there is one other thing with this album.....It has to be coolest westcoast album covers of all ever made. And the backside with Bill in that jeans out fit with sneakers and a Fender Telecaster.Respect ! And not to forget the great background vocals on this album.Check out -What Good Is Love-and You know what I mean.I actually give this one 6 points out of possible 5.
Bill Champlin -Single 1978 Bill Champlin's debut solo album. Champlin who got to know David Foster during sessions for the Sons Of Champlin album "A Circle Filled With Love" where Foster arranged the strings. For Champlin's record "Single" he called in Foster as producer. The sound on the album was the R&B sound that Champlin’s former group "The Sons Of Champlin" had on their later records (A Cirlce Filled With Love and Loving Is Why) with horns, funky bass lines, organs and keyboards and Foster has brought in a lot of strings. "Single" has THE most impressive list of studio musicians I've ever seen on an album. Foster had brought in the whole of TOTO (Steve Lukather on guitar, David Paich on keyboards, Steve Pocaro on synthesizer programming, Bobby Kimball on background vocals, David Hungate on bass and Jeff Pocaro on drums), Jerry Hey as horn arranger and player along with his horn ensemble, Michael McDonald and Darryl Hall on background vocals, Jay Graydon and Ray Parker Jr on guitar and of course Foster himself on keyboards. The heart breaking ballad "We Both Tried" which is beautifully arranged with loads of strings. Great songs like "Yo Mama", "Careless", "I Dont Want You Any More", and the funky "Fly With Me". Single is a very good album and one of the Westcoast rock's classics. The perfect blend of mainstream blue eyed soul, r&b and rock is a great example of pure Westcoast. Allthough Champlin pulled it off even better with his next album "Runaway" the album is a must for Chicago and Champlin fans, but the record is hard to get nowadays. 4+/5
