Well, if Airplay's 1980-smash is one cornerstone of Westcoast music, this album by Bill Champlin truly is another one. I just love EVERYTHING about it. Bill's vocals are just perfect and David Foster's arrangements and production leave nothing to be desired. Just listen to "Take It Uptown" and "Satisfaction". This is pure magic!!! A masterpiece!!! *****
Bill Champlin "Runaway". Another classic in Westcoast music, produced by David Foster, here you'll find classic songs as "Satisfaction", "Sara" and other good stuff. The hole record is a miracle. It's a masterpiece. If you find this record in a store so buy it, you won't be disappointed. 10/10 / Bengt
Now this Guy can SING! Just listen to the track SATISFACTION, written by RICHARD PAGE, AWESOME! Once again featuring the cream of the L.A. session scene. Gotta get back to love is a KILLER tune. Buy this CD!
Now we´re talking!! This is top of the line. This is the Holy Grail of Westcoast. Can this man sing or what? Is this a killer production or what? Among all the so called must have albums in the westcoast genre this is the ultimate one!
This is one of the first classic west coast records I`ve discovered. BC has been one of my favourite singer since then...... + a first class Foster production as well......
Bill Champlin -Runaway 1981 Producers David Foster and Kenny Loggins, the latter produced "Take It Uptown" with Foster. The best studio muscians are on this record: Lukather, Graydon, Hey and many more. I consider it to be pure westcoast. "Take It Uptown" "Stop Knocking On My Door" a great uptemo rocker with lyrics about drug dealing and features Champlin on lead guitar and Hammond B3 organ. "Satisfaction" a song that Champlin also has played live with Chicago. The three wonderful ballads "Sara", "Tonight Tonight" (a slightly altered cover version of Ray Kennedy's "My Everlasting Love"), "The Fool Is All Alone”. The songs "Sara" and "Tonight Tonight" were released as singles and charted but with no success. Much of this perhaps beacuse bad marketing. Bill was suposebly going to re-release the album after he joined Chicago, but the record company were scared that if he was succesfull he would leave the group. One of the best Westcoast records ever done with a perfect blend of horns, piano licks, heavy guitars courtesy of Bill and Steve Lukather, Jay Graydons melodical guitar fills, wonderful balladery and Bill Champlin's wonderful voice to wrap it all up. Bill himself has said that this record is the closest thing to “westcoast” that he’s done. This record is actually, along with Bill’s “Single” the first “real” westcoast record I bought back i 98’ so it has a special place in my heart. 5/5
I have just recieved a copy and this has got to be reissued either in Japan or Europe!
Despite initial doubts and a concerned phone call from Kenny Loggins, Bill Champlin joined then-struggling horn outfit Chicago in 1981. Bringing with him his friend and longtime collaborator David Foster, the former Sons of Champlin singer played a key role in the band’s sudden turn of fortune. The one downside to the union was that it didn’t give Elektra much incentive to market the album Champlin had just recorded with Foster at the helm. Champlin’s second solo album, “Runaway” came and went largely without notice. Still, it remains a cult favorite to this day, striking the critical balance between commercial appeal and musical sophistication with pinpoint precision. Standout tracks: Satisfaction, Without You
To all those intereseted in this album, I was recently pleased to find out that this album is now available for download from the iTunes store, and much cheaper than purchasing the import version.
i've always been a fan of chicago since i was a youngster back in the late 80s and the music of David Foster hit me straight away. Been a fan of 80s chicago i found Bill Champlin who's soulful/ruff voice struck me from the first time i heard it. This ablum does what i was expecting chicago Ballads and groovy upbeat tracks writers include Bill himself along with Steve Lukather, Kenny Loggins, Richard Page and many more. Also with David Foster both Co-writing and producing the album it makes for a great listen over all i prefer this album to Chicago 16. In short if you are a fan of David Foster music and chicago 16,17,18 a must buy if you can get hold of a copy.
