Wow, what can you say about this perfect marriage of Chicago and David Foster. The songwriting, vocal arrangements, and performances all contribute to the best Chicago recordings of all time. My favorite song is Hard Habit to Break, which highlights a beautiful duet with Peter Cetera and Bill Champlin, coupled with a brilliant arrangement by David Foster. Without one weak song on the album, Chicago 17 goes down as a commercial and artistic triumph. Sadly, it was also Peter Cetera's last album with the band, but I hear that maybe soon the magic could quite possibly be rekindled...one could only hope.
I think this is a v good album for the most part. It has many fine songs but i think 'please hold on' is rather hideous. I cannot think of too many worse foster songs from the 80's. Some of these songs are often half Aor/ half commercial pop to me. I think I am hearing it like this because it was an album intended for for mass consumption and big sales in the commercial pop world so maybe had to mix the two elements of more 'bland' pop with more interesting AOR touches. I think the best songs are 'Along comes a woman' and then others like 'once in a lifetime' 'hard habit to break' and 'prima donna'. Prima donna has a great sound for the opening and also its break is really good. This itself is a bit of a repetetive song to many people thesedays and I can understand why. While I would'nt call it the best of 17, it is probably my personal favorite. A definate good album to buy.
My favorite Chicago album, thanks to Mr. Foster. Great production and songwriting. Løp og kjøøøp!!!
Oh my, its been twenty two years since I had this cassette. I waited for the CD to be remastered and it was worth it. It sounds great. Rhino did a good job. I would have given this 5 stars but they put one bonus track on it which was okay but I was looking for them to remix something new or atleast include the old remix of "Along comes a women" It was good to hear "Stay the night" remastered and sounding great! This was Peter Cetera's last ride with Chicago and he went out with a bang. The band did get lucky and they handed things over to Jason Scheff. He could pull off this material with no problem.
Oh jesus, where do I begin...This album is simply incredible. Killer songs, demon production, absolute world class musicianship (check out Paul Jackson Jr's guitar work). Best Songs are "Along Comes A Woman", "Stay The Night", "We Can Stop The Hurtin′" and "Once In A Lifetime". Get it!
Certainly the Chicago "west coast" masterpiece. Yes it was Cetera's last work with the group but he later redid some of the songs with AZ Yet. Cetera was right, "you're the inspiration"!
good bonus track. I reviewed this album before and somehow forgot to mention "You're The Inspiration" among the best songs. Certainly one of the best tracks ever. Love that song. Like I say, I enjoy the bonus track on the newly remastered release but I didn't find the sound as good as it is on the 'the chicago story' (a 19 track best of release from the early 2000's containing a few tracks off 17). You're the inspiration, and Hard Habit to Break etc. And...also.... "Stay the Night"..... on this remaster starts incorrectly in my opinion. You don't hear the first drum hit in full (the wave begins 'on' the drum hit). That's not how it is on the original (or like I say, on the chicago story cd) and it's simply annoying. Also 'Prima Donna' seems to start wrong when I 'pick it' from this cd cause of the place chosen for the track pointer. Altogether annoying remaster for me. Too loud and the chicago story has better sound for the songs that feature from this album. A - B them at the same level and you will hear. Anyway, it's still a good album and the bonus track is good
