It's been a long wait but worth it. A great collection of songs. A couple that aren't up to scratch, but what can you expect on a double album? A perfect balance of old fashioned love songs and political comment. And then there's always Henleys voice.
So,28 years, has it been worth the wait? Most definately yes.In their first return to the studio since 1979's the 'The Long Run',Don Henley,Glenn Frey,Joe Walsh & Timothy B. Schmit deliver an album that is epic in both it's scope & ambition.Across 21 tracks all the things that I loved about them are here. From the classic accapella harmonies of the opener 'No More Walks In The Wood' to Joe Walsh's blistering guitar solo on the 10 minute title track you realise that it's the contributions of the four individuals that make them the band that they are. Highlights are numerous - the aforementioned 'Long Road Out Of Eden' (which wouldn't have sounded out of place on Don Henley's last solo album 'Inside Job),'Lately (Last Good Time In Town) which is a showcase for Joe Walsh & grooves like Steely Dan, to the classic vocal interplay between Don & Glenn on 'How Long'.Not to be overshadowed Timothy B.Schmit delivers a gorgeous vocal on 'I Don't Want To Hear It Anymore. Welcome back guys
"Don't let me down", did I sing for some years expecting the long awaited new songs by THE heroes. Then "Hole in the world" came and a biography told how Henley and Frey nowadays used to write songs together... I learned to live with it: there would never be a new Eagles album. And then they came out of the blue... and made two! And whats more: it's like they never left at all: "No more walk" sounds like "Keep on trying" (Poco) for the 21st century. "How long" is a long lost brother of "Already gone" and Joe Walsh sings a beloved Frankie Miller tune "Guilty of a crime" in a way it brings tears of joy to yo' eyes. There's "Peaceful easy feelings" and "I can't tell you whys" all over the place. But they sound like 2007. Unbelievable! Definitely my favorite records for the century.
