everything's been said about this masterpiece! a pure jewel without a weak song.don henley & glenn frey are at peak form even if the cd took years in the studio to be recorded. this is the a must have cd of all serious collectors of westcoast music. every cd of the genre recorded after "the long run" is influenced by the sound and the style of one of the most incredible cd's of the 80's !
OK you can really argue on the quality of some songs here. When this came out in '79 I was rather disappointed concerning either sound as well as lyrics of half bred disco stompers like "Disco Strangler", "King of Hollywood" or "Teenage Jail". And what sense could "The greeks don't want no freaks" make? I mean "Hotel California" was a mere poem and every song included is part of the Great American Songbook. The expectations turned up to be too high in the end for the guys. Nevertheless it contained three hit singles, the remarkable rocker "Heartache tonight" with fine slide guitars, a ballad "I can't tell you why" which proved that Tim B. Schmit can really sing and the title track. "In the city" sung by Joe Walsh was fine but released before. The regret-filled closing tune "Sad Cafe" brings tears to your eyes, in many ways...
