Now we are relly talking! This guy is all over soooooooooo many 'top' Westcoast albums it defies belief, but it is true. Why, because he is the 'man'. Many thought, ok so he can write the stuff but can he sing??? Well, check out 'Solo'. It is nothing short of incredible.
After hearing the serious masterpiece that planet 3 (feat Clif on vocals) released in 1991 called "A Heart from the big machine' or "Music from the Planet", I think many people rush to get this (they pay quite a lot of money too right now, cause it is out of print). I was one of those people who was left thrilled by Planet 3, and If you listen to the samples on this page... you hear the exact same sound, and you think.... wow this was probably recorded in the same sessions/setup (I don't know if it was). Anyway, It does have an almost identicle sound to planet 3 throughout most the album and I must tell you it's certainly worth getting and has some great songs, but overall it does not live up to Planet 3 for me personally. It's a different kind of album anyway. I find a few of the songs not to my personal liking, not that they are not great songs, and the odd one or two I find boring and maybe not such great songs, like 'what's a heart to do' for example is to my ears such a basic and bland ballad. I'm a pretty under-developed westcoast maniac and I still think it's a good cd so don't let me put you off, I just thought that most songs are not of quite the same level. Of course the track quantity is a little larger here too. Clif's voice I must say is a truly magical and beautiful voice of it's own. Everyone needs to hear it. Just listen to the great 'Dreams Fade Away'. It's kind of Ironic that this was maybe my favorite song on this cd when I picked it up after the daze Planet 3 left me in (and it still probably is). In other words maybe 'the time had come to pass' and eitherway I look at it, I don't think anything could have lived up to Planet 3 and how much I liked and still like that album. So to me, "Solo" is a good cd and essential for my collection cause I love Clif Magness's voice but I would definately recommend "Planet 3- Music from The planet" (available remastered at www.Jaygraydon.com) first and tell people to wait for a re-issue of this cd if they can. Cheers
