This is Brenda Russell's best recording. She excels here with mellow tunes and relaxing melodies with thoughtful words. This remastered version also includes her commercial and artistic success, "Piano in the Dark."
I've always admired Brenda Russell for her gorgeous voice and inspired songwriting-- in my opinion, she is criminally underrated (perhaps because of her unwillingness to go with the current trends). This was a superb debut with such wonderful Quiet Storm delicacies as "So Good So Right", "In The Thick Of It", the lush "If Only For One Night" and the heartwarming "God Bless You" being among her best songs. A truly beautiful album.
A friend of mine gave me a cassette taped copy of this album back in 1983. I listened to it once and I was hooked forever. Brenda Russell has a beautiful tone that I aspired to acquire, and it has encouraged me to keep singing and writing music for myself. The songs are just so fresh and the lyrics very relevant to aspiring modern women, who even in the 80's longed to take control of their love lives. I would lie on my bed and attribute the track If Only for One Night to the man I was desperately keen on. Now I can't remember who he was, or whether I got his attention but I remember the emotions - I would have done anything for him. I think God Bless You simply sublime - on occasions when I was tempted to settle for second best, one listen helped to strengthen my resolve. A Little Bit of Love succeeds in raising the spirits - a sunny day would make it perfect. And that's how I think of Brenda Russell, her voice and her songs - perfect.
