What a talented singer and what a voice! Although I would rate his later 2 albums higher (these are absolutely AOR classics to me), I like his debut "China Girl" from the first to the last track. It has a slight Midwest-sound that reminds me of the Eagles. R.I.P. Van, and thank you for your great music!
Who the hell can make me a copy....?
The rare and hard to find Van Stephenson. His first album in the small label Handshake Records, sadly never issued on CD. At this time (early 80's) Van was writing hit songs for artists from the Nashville scene (Restless Heart i.e.) and the songwriting in 'China Girl' follow these roots. Mid-westcoast sound, with some late 70's AOR feel. Think Eagles meets Pages, classic. His voice is brillant here, as always (listen 'New York, Hold Her Tight', awesome). Very good and polished production.
I have China Girl. I bought it at a discount record store in Hollywood in 1982 or 3? In a bargin bin for twenty five cents. I love this L.P. But I am going to auction it on ebay in the next couple of days (1/25/08) If your interested in bidding, you know where to go.
