Excellent debut album from the legendary white heart. This album, like a lot of the groups material, has some excellent messages even if you were not a religious person. Take ‘Listen to the Lonely’ for example asking you to listen to the lonely. It also has the line ‘Their alone in the crowd , all the noise is too loud, no one hears what they have to say’. This actually reminds me of my later youth in night club’s having my hearing damaged by the often rubbish corporate music that was quite clearly, though enjoyed by many, a loveless and even unkind force to many others. They continued this fine debut with the equally good 1984 follow up ‘vital signs’. Again, take the message of ‘let your first thought be love’ on the vital signs. This song’s lyrics reminded me of a few years earlier where I had learn’t in jobs that managers never gave you any trouble if you met their moodiness and sometimes plain spitefulness, with warmth and kindness towards them. Anyway, I would try to explain this to other people at that time (often people even older) who would complain about troublesome people at their work but I’m not sure that I could explain exactly). A few years on I heard …’let your first thought be love’, and well, while it is important to not let anyone treat you poorly, the message of the song is clever and reminded me of this. I’d really not turn anyone away from any white heart album I’ve heard (I have most of their many albums) because they all seem to have something good on them.
This is an excellent album. It is very hard to get with usual searching methods/resources, but try contacting home sweet records website by email if you want the original white heart albums as I think they might tell you they can supply them at normal price). Otherwise, or as a nice 'alternative', why not try to get 'hits from the heart'- a 1999 produced white heart 'best of' that contains only white heart songs from the first albums (so I suppose you could say it's a best of for the westcoast white heart fans). This cd is always on ebay sealed buy now for 1.99 or 2.99 us$ or even 0.99 starting bid sealed new- an it gets NO bids!! This will show you many of the classic songs from the dan huff era. However, may I also strongly recommend any westcoast fan the 1989 album 'Freedom'. I am a complete westcoast AOR only fan and I Love old whiteheart, but FREEDOM, produced by Brown Bannister, is in my opinion white heart's greatest album of all time and one of the mastepieces of the 80's. Any music lover should get this immediately.
